TIMES ARE A CHANGING AND SO ARE YOUR TRADING STATEMENTS!!
For a number of years Pam, Co-Ordinator of SIS LETS has done all the data entry of trades. This has enabled you the member to get your Trading Statements, keep track of what you’ve bought and spent, etc. It was decided that it was time for this work to be shared around and the best way to do that was to find an online database that suited our needs. After much research, emailing all LETS groups in Australia and international LETS groups about which accounting system they use, we came up with CES (Community Exchange System). This database originates from South Africa and there are 14 New Zealand LETS groups currently using it. The use of such a system means that we are even able to trade with other systems worldwide who are using CES.
The three Database Co-Ordinators are Deni (Salisbury), Sue (North East) and Pauline (Southern). We are very pleased with the system, it is extremely user friendly and the admin support from the CES administrators in South Africa has been wonderful. The system also has the capacity for us to put our Resource Guide on it. So, if you’re offering accommodation perhaps you’ll get a call from a LETS member in NZ who’s coming our way on holidays!
We have set the database up so that at the moment only given names and the first letter of your surname appears on it but we will be surveying members shortly because for the system to work to its fullest it would be best if we could use surnames and email addresses (if you have one). There is no danger of the member’s information going public as the database is password protected. The general public and spammers can’t get in without knowing a password. The other change with this system is that children who trade need to be given their own member number. We are aware that if your child buys at markets but does not sell then they will end up with a debit balance. It will be the parents’ responsibility to bring this into credit and this can be done by simply transferring units.
As the database is international we have had to add “SA” after “SL” to identify us. Hence, your number will now read SLSA …… North East becomes NESA…. and Southern becomes SISA.
The Cape Town group using CES has 2000 members and wait for it – almost all of them enter their own trades! Yes, that’s right, the system allows the seller to enter his or her own trades. If you work online – whether it be at home, the library, etc we encourage you to check out the CES website at www.ces.org.za
With this newsletter you will receive your first new Trading Statement produced from the online database. The statements are easy to understand and clearly show your trades. Your previous balance was transferred from the old “manual” system. You will also receive a “welcome” letter which will give you a password that is used to access your account online. Please go online and check out the system.
Salisbury LETS members who have any comments regarding the system please feel free to email me at chookstuff&chariot.net.au or phone 8380 5511.
LETS Association (SA) is putting together a new web site that will be completed soon. It will contain information about LETS in SA, future markets and workshops, announcements, etc. The address is www.interletssa.info
With everyone so time poor, we need to work smarter and this online database and the future use of the online Resource Guide are the first steps! If you’re not computer savvy don’t dismay, check out your Resource Guide and do a trade for some computer training. Be positive about it and think of it as a challenge – a whole wonderful world (would that be www) will open up for you!

CHRISTMAS ON A BUDGET WORKSHOP – 18TH NOVEMBER
As we all know, Xmas is just around the corner. As soon as the Pageant arrives, the year is virtually over!! Our November 18th workshop is “Christmas on a Budget” and some of the Committee are busily attempting to “research” the topic to bring you bits n pieces. However, we also would like YOU to bring along show and tell home-made Christmas items for everyone to share at this workshop.
Our new and talented member Monica (welcome Monica) had for sale at our September Market/Workshop a beautiful decorative piece made from coloured magazine pages! Monica has kindly agreed to share this and will show us how to make it at the November Workshop. A friend Christa makes Christmas stars out of straw/grass. As a child in her rural village in Germany everyone made their decorations and as they didn’t have access to much, straw was utilised – the old “work with what you’ve got”.
Let’s not think of Spotlight, Cunningham’s Warehouse, Cheap As Chips, etc. to run off to and buy, buy, buy. What if you could only make gifts, wrappings, decorations, etc with what was around you – perhaps leftover cardboard, string, grapevine cuttings, gum nuts, wire, old fabric etc – bring your ideas and projects along, we all want to share them. After all, isn’t that what Christmas is about; sharing not spending. We want to see your ingenuity, not your purse! Leave those credit cards right where they are. You’re a resourceful lot, so get thinking/working! This workshop should be fun for the kids so bring them along.
If you’ve got an idea, but we need to have supplies eg cardboard, egg cartons, crayons, glue, etc. on hand so that we can all have a go, email Althea who will be the Workshop Presenter at kev1n&chariot.com.au or phone her on 8359-0405.

CONGRATULATIONS TO US!!!
We recently applied for one of the annual grants from United Way. The good news is – we were successful in receiving a grant for $650!! This is great as it will allow us to continue on with our successful workshop programme. They have previously given us support. Their website (www.unitedwaysa.org) sums up the organisation: “United Way South Australia Inc. is a non-profit community organisation dedicated to helping South Australians by assisting valuable human care services and welfare organisations. United Way is not a church or religious organisation and receives no government funding. It makes good sense to support the community in which you live and you can do this by donating to a single organisation – United Way – your South Australian community organisation caring for South Australians.” We are very appreciative of any support that is given to our small community organisation. The Salisbury LETS Committee and members would like to say a big THANK YOU to United Way for their support. We look forward to continuing to bring to our members and the public new, interesting and free workshops in 2007. |

QUALITY ASSURANCE – “LET’S” ALL GO FOR IT
One of the things I most like about LETS is that there are many of us who support its environmental “arm”. At our markets you can find all kinds of interesting pre-loved things. I’ve been an op shopper and Trash and Treasure scourer for years. I like that I can find a nice piece of clothing that hasn’t come off a rack with 30 other identical pieces on it. Goodness knows there is enough “stuff” in the stream for almost all of us not to have to buy new ever again but yes, I am aware that’s not how it works! A good percentage of Australia is drowning in over-consumption.
Observing stalls at flea markets, it’s obvious that the items that are in good condition and clean sell – it’s not Einstein stuff. The sellers that bring items that have not been “detailed” (a good clean, some repair, etc) quite often leave with them at the end of the day.
The same theory applies to our markets. In a flea market situation there is quite often a “palm it off” mentality. You’ll probably never see the seller that you’ve bought that less than perfect piece from again. At our markets however you’re more than likely to see the same people at most markets. If you’re thinking “hang on, it’s buyer beware”, you need to remember that in LETS we are a “community” and we need to treat each other with respect. So as you’re heading towards a market that you think you’ll trade at, take that bit of time to check out your sale items, make sure they’re clean and in good repair. Check that the torch you intend selling does in fact work and that the things you intend to put on the freebies table are clean and in good order. Those few extra measures will hold you in good stead with your LETS community. “LET’S” all go for the quality assurance tick!

ATTENTION SALISBURY LETS MEMBERS - FREE CAKE!
Don’t forget that financial members are entitled to one of Rosemarie’s delicious Xmas cakes but you need to collect one from the North East Xmas Market on 26th November (see details in this newsletter).
So why not get some bits n pieces together and come and trade on the day as well. We’d love to see you.

The experiment to hold our first cooking demonstration workshop on a Wednesday morning was enjoyed by those who were able to come along. We did attract some new faces and welcomed a new member. In order that more people can enjoy these demonstrations, we decided we’d try holding them in conjunction with our markets. We enjoyed our first successful LETS COOK presentation at our October market when our versatile chef Rosemarie showed us how to prepare some simple but tasty and healthy Indian style dishes. Everyone enjoyed tasting the chapatties and lentils, especially when we were shown how quick and easy it is. Following on from this we’ll be having a LETS COOK feature during our forthcoming markets.
So make sure you come along for the earlier 10am start. Trading as normal, the cooking demo with free tastings and then our usual budget lunch. Find details of our next market and LETS cook below.

Christmas is a season of giving and giving is the key to living! So “LET’S” give ourselves away Not just at Christmas but every day And remember kind and thoughtful deeds Or a hand outstretched in time of need Is the rarest of gifts for it is a part Not of the purse but a loving heart And he who gives of himself will find True joy of heart and peace of mind Helen Steiner Ross
As this is our last newsletter for 2006, the Committee of Salisbury LETS would like to thank you for your support during this year. We wish you a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year and look forward to you joining us again in 2007.
